View Full Version : Is it common for wahoo to swim up to your boat?
Was of goldy today bottom bashing when one about a metre long swam straight towards the boat to within 5/6 metres. All I had was a slug rigged up on a spare rod so i threw it out and got smashed only for the hooks to pull. I then rerigged two rods with deep divers on them and started to troll within 5 mins one of the rods go's off only for the hooks to pull again so now all I have for my first encounter with wahoo's is 2 chewed lures! So hence to say next time I want to be prepared any idea's on traces, lures, baits etc would be greatly appreciated.

They will come in real close. I have had them take a bait only 2m under the boat when dropping to the bottom. When trolling, they will come in close to the transom and hit the lures closest to the boat that are running in the prop wash. I've taken a heap on wahoo on skirted lures running in the short corner position, about 6m behind the boat ..... Our biggest so far hit the short corner .... it bottomed out the 25kg scales I have on board.
Easiest way to get them is to troll hard bodied or jet head style lures.

yep, they will indeed come right up and for some reason just sort of "hang" there with little movement, I have seen them sit there for ten minutes or more.

Had the same thing, out off the goldy, had 1 swim up beside the boat as soon as we had anchored, had nothing rigged, not even a slug :(
so we watched as it swam away.....
