Hey guys...

Just after an opinion on reel seats that fasten by turning the front cork grip as opposed to the standard nut type ring.

So far I haven't been impressed. I bought a Shimano XCel Weapon spin rod to use with my Daiwa Exceler 2000. The rod blank itself was great and landed a few nice bass on it. However, after the trip when I tried to remove the reel.. the cork grip detached itself from the reel seat leaving my reel wedged in place.. Took some effort to remove it.

I thought I must have just got a lemon and the mart that can't be mentioned gave me a new replacement. Next fishing trip.. same story... Not so lucky this time and they have sent the rod away to Shimano.. still waiting.

I was about to buy myself a Shimano Raider spin which I understand has the same reel attachment method. .. hence my reservation.

What are others experience with this?

Cheers
Danny

Yeh does happen sounds like a dud batch though to happen so fast and 2 in a row. From memory have had about 5 raiders come back with the same problem.

wongus,

How hard are you screwing the front cork grip up, I have the same reel seat on a Shimano T curve with a 1500 Exceller and not a problem.

In the intructions to attach your reel it is suggested not to tighten to firmly, the cork forgrip gives far more grip in your hand when tightening it than the ring type reel seat so it is easy to over do it.

Tighten it with a couple of fingers as you would the ring type and feel if the reel is firm.

I've got Steve Starling Squidgy & Two Raiders with the cork grips & have not had one problem with them..

Like Jeremy said it could just be a dud batch & remember they are mass produced in China..

Best plastics rod I have is a shakespear Synergy, with the screw from the front seat . I love them & wish all my rods were like it !!!

I had a Sharkespere Synergy and it did the same thing the cork departed from the handle. Now have a T-Curve 2-5kg no problems at all even if it is fairly tight

I've got a synergy rod and the cork foregrip was fine for a while and then it broke up. I used a tennis racquet grip to cover the exposed nut and now its better than before ;)
Also have a couple of raiders. I take particular care when tightening and removing reels to avoid this happening again. there is a neprene ring at the nut end. i make sure i only twist this section and not the cork.
