Hi all,

I have just got myself a new Tyrnos 20 and Shimano backbone rod. I have set this up with 45lb line.

I would like to set the drag on this reel at about 30% of the total line strength (about 14-15 lb or 6-7 kg). Just wonderting if any of you have any tips on as easy way to set the drag to this weight.

Thanks heaps.

I have been told before that 1 litre o water equals 1 kilo. If this is correct fill a bucket with 6 to 7 litres of water atach to line and set drag. I am sure if am not correct some one here will clarify, i am no expert at this.

your right Jewie, water density is very close to 1 kg per litre at room temp

Spot on with the water and bucket, but you will get a suprise when you try to lift it. Attach a spring balance scale and pull against it while someone reads the scale

Hey snelly,
Whats the plan if you hook up to the bottom.?

I've found the spring balance scale method easiest also.

G'day
I have a tyrnos 20, and the methods mentioned will be fine. WE set all the drags on the reels o the charterboat by the scales.

Just remember when setting the drag that you back the lever right off before you set the drag by tightening and adjusting the knob.

I have a really light link from my sinker to my rig....that is usually where i get hooked to the bottom.....so i just snap the sinker off....I hope...

Mate sounds a lot like the rig I bought .( TYRNOS 20 , TCURVE 15-24KG With 50lb whiplash ) I used the spring scale as well , but It's still a virgin to date .

Yeah I'm thinking of setting it on the boat.

And trust me, I know all about backing the lever off before adjusing the drag. One of my mates set his whilst it was in the 'strike' position and it stuffed it. I'm not sure what did it, but I'm asuming it must have something to do with adjusting it whilst there was strain on the gears.

Thanks for the tips guys. Much appreciated. I cant wait to see how it goes with a nice macka on the end of it.

I set the drag on my Tyrnos two speed using the bucket method. Same line strength - 45 lb. (Shogun) All went well.

Used this method on another spin outfit with 30lb line on the reel but on a cheap Shimano rod ($30) which was rated much less than 30lb. Never had been a problem when using the rod and reel in practice but when doing the bucket thing, the rod snapped. ;D

With that setup either using the scales or bucket method set the drag to about 4-5 kg on strike and that should cover most fishing situations. If you loose too much line you cna crank it up past strike.
