I am computer savvy at best. I really do not understand how or why they work. I have been using computers since they were a “ C” Cassette drive, yes, that is before most of you were born. These modern creatures are much more sofisticated and easy to use than the old stuff.

I am running Windows 98SE, 533mhz, 128 RAM ( now ) and a little mouse inside running on a treadmill giving me power. I had to install USB ports and Ethernet Connection. Yes, I am running a Dinosaur, but, if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.
I don’t even have a CD burner and do not run anti-virus software ( haven’t had a virus in 2 1/2 years ).

So, I decide a couple of days ago to buy a CD Burner to save all my pics and text docs in case the Dinosaur packs it in. To my surprize I was told they don’t even make CD burners anymore, and that I will have to buy a DVD Burner. OK, so I shop around and find a PC place not far from me. Trot over and pic up a CD Burner/ DVD ROM Combo that comes with software ( NERO ) for doing what I want. I also purchase blank CD’s.

Burner $39....... 50 dics 15.

I was told that the installation of the drive was easy and the software will load up easy as well. OK, I pull apart the tower and find CD ROM, remove said rom, replace it with CD/DVD thingie and plug all cables in. Return tower to pre-refit state and all looks well. Start up puter and put CD software in. Load up NERO, all good. So I think I will burn myself a CD. I selected a few pics ( about 250 and some video and text etc ). That doesn’t work as I realise I am about to burn way too much MB for the disc. So I re-try with a smaller amount. All looks ok with about 50 pics selected. Follow instructions and everything seems to be OK, until a box comes up saying “ Device not ready / insert disc “. Disc IS inserted........! I attempt to take disc out and check, then the whole shebang decides that I should start over telling me “ I have aborted “ the project. OK start again,,,,,,,, same result with words to effect “ Disc required is CD-R/RW. mmm

I check disc packing and it says CD-R. OK, I think I have the wrong discs. Next day I call store and speak to tech. Tell him problems and box messages. He is confused as this has never happened to him before and the discs are fine and should burn. He then suggests that because I am a Dinosaur ( running 98 ) there may be a conflict or something and that I should bring my tower down to them to have a sticky. AARRGGHHH !!!!

I do not take tower to store. I actually go through the motions again. Some of you reading this may have already solved my problem !!!!! ::)

After many attempts I decide to put the disc in upside down. The clear part I assumed was to go to the top and the white coloured side down. BUT NO......... NO...... I burn off a pic or two. Am I that stupid ? Did I just not know ? Never having burnt a CD before, I suggest it was complete innocence or ignorance of the proceedure. Why didn;t the store tech ask me which way I put the disc into the machine.... ? I know, he assumed I knew, he assumed I have done this before.

So now I am able to burn pics. Haven’t tried text doc s yet or videos. But there is one thing bothering me.
When I select a task on the NERO software I get to choose the Video/ Pictures button, but when I select that there are only two options. 1. Video 2. super video. No mention of pics, and that confused the hell outta me.

Yep, had your problem solved about
"Disc IS inserted........! I attempt to take disc out and check, then the whole shebang...

Nothing wrong with running a dinosaur, I still have one box here on 98.

Video option is only if you want to make a video, DVD, VCD etc. That will play ina DVD player.

If you are simply backing up stuff it is all data, 1's and 0's, so just select data, or whatever the basic option is.

Just don't let the smoke out and you will be fine. Once you let that out you will never get it back in.

you bewdy..now have our own computer genius to solve our problems...what is that direct number again Steve?? LOL

Phil..my computer came with a CD burner but when I bought the DVD burner I bought an external one so that if any problems..just unplug it and computer keeps operating ok...same as the router is external as are all the modems I have ever had except in the lap top.

I can see a business opportunity here....burning a notation onto blank discs..."THIS SIDE UP"...hehe
