Hi all, Im going on a holiday later this year to frasor Island. I want to buy another alvey because at the moment I have only got a small estuary one... The other thing is that I dont really know for sure which brand of surf rod to get or which length ect... I will be fishing for tailor, dart, whiting and other fish that you'll get of frasor's surf beach, we will be going in 4x4 so I can have a 1 piece rod or a 2 piece (yeh!!!) Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Stotty

hey Stotty

for the beach i use the gary howard surf classic, 13'6", with a 650 C5 alvey and 15 lb line this can handle tailor, dart, bream etc, but it is a bit heavy for whiting. Therefore when i specifically target whiting i use an old snyder glas mag bream rod.

A 12' rod should be fine for tailor but you can go up to 13'6"
with respect to reels, Alvey 650 series are good allrounders.

Cheers rockfisho

How much do you want to spend? There are a couple of Alvey combo's out that match a 650A5 with either 12'or 13'6"rods and they are pretty good value and will get you out of trouble.

In that sort of price range there is heaps you could get. Have a look at some of the wilson stuff built on kilwell blanks aswell. They are light and pretty tough and there aussie made aswell. 4144 would be great for bream and whiting and a 6144 would be better for tailor but either one would just about handle either job. And you could deffinatelly get a wilson and an alvey for 300 or less.

I use the 13.5 ft Gary Howard, same as rockfisho, mine with a 6500BCVRR and my wife uses a 12 ft Wilson with a 6000BCVRR, both are nice, but the Wilson is a lot lighter. The Gary Howard is great for big tailor etc but is a bit heavy for whiting fishing.

Be careful with the 6500BCVRR, sometimes, because of all the extra clap trap on the reel face, the line can get badly tangled around the handleplate etc.
So when i'm fishing in a bit of wind I restrain the line a split second before the sinker hits the water, this way, it will stop a tangle 98% of the time.

The Wilson SeaCoaster is also a good, cheap model of fishing rod (13.5ft), about 100- 120 bucks.

The Snyders are a bit more expensive ,especially when you decide to go for Magraphite.

I met Gary Howard at this years boat show, and according to him the best brands of surf rods are Wilson, Snyderglas, and his own, naturally.
