Is this a holden or ford question? I'm looking to change from my Penn spinfisher to something a little more sophisticated and refined and both these reels are within my budget. Usage will be predominatly casting for spotties. Which would you recommend and why ? Or would you recommend something else? Thanks winston.

Hi Mate,
If you are going to use the outfit for casting at spotties & small tuna with slugs etc then I would most definetly go with the stradic as it has the fast retrieve....I think the stradic is 5:8 to 1 which will help you get more strikes from mackeral & Tuna....The shimano reels all come with a 10year warranty which is pretty hard to go past as well.

I would go the daiwa but if your going to be doing a lot of fast spinning, then the stradic would be a better option. Stradic has 5.8:1 retrieve and the tierra has something like 4.7:1
The Tierra is a smoother reel does look a lot better :D

Plastic fantastic,
What do you mean by the stradic getting a bit long in the tooth?

If a particular model is being produced for a long time thats got to say something about the quality wouldn't it? especially having a 10 year warranty stamped on it too:rolleyes: What is the warranty on the Tierra reels??

PS: can't say witch would be better for you winston as I haven't seen the tierra's yet. But from others posts on retrival rates it sounds like if your high speed spining the stradic is the way to go!

Cheers

Brandon, Most daiwas have a 5 year warranty.. which is more than enough for me. By 5 years I know I'd be looking to upgrade

check the diameter of the spool when looking at retrieve ratios. A big dia spool may be better than a higher geared reel if the high geared reel has a smaller spool.

I'd ask how many cm per turn of the handle-can help prevent blisters. You can always slow down, but you can't go faster than flat out :)

A TSS4 or 850 spinfisher may retrieve more line per turn of the handle than either of these, as may a big Daiwa. TSS4s are cheap and light, and have ok drags out of the box. At least, mine does.

Nabs I wish I could do that

........I agree with Brandon.....One EXTREMELY important factor here is the retrieve rate of the reel and some of these guys are overlooking it....For macks & tuna you always want pace in the retrieve.....Sure the little daiwa is nice and smooth and has most of the features that the more expensive daiwa's have but remember also its made in China, has a small spool capacity and has a slow retrieve...........Dont get me wrong I have Daiwa reels which I absolutely love and shimano reels which I love....But for the job at hand (high speed spinning of slugs) the stradic wins.:)

HI Winston,

Go Tierra, Stradics are known for wind knots, tierra have latest technology of High End Daiwas only alluminium body making it heavier than Ion treated magnesium,

Hope this helps

def go the diawa reel, Pulled a stradic 8000 out of the box the other day to put o display at work and gave er a crank. Ive never heard machining noise like it in a new reel, was a nasty scratchy whirring. Also the drags in the stradics are known to die in the a$$ from time to time, esp on tuna

Is my TSS4 hopelessly out of fashion these days?
