Question - NZ Freshwater

Off to NZ in January and will be fishing a few of the lakes - mainly from the shore.
Not in to fly fishing so any tips on how to catch trout on spinning gear. I've got a 5 piece travel spinning rod plus threadline reel plus boxes lures/plastics (mainly for bass and goldens). Only got a few spinners though - any tips.
Trying to avoid taking on a guide but thast will be my next alternative.

Going all over NZ in a hire car so fishing is a second after the scenic tour bit.
Have found a NZ fishing site - http://www.fishnz.co.nz
Still to check it out properly.
I'm going to fish Lake Taupo in the North Island with a guide first but want to focus on spinners and lures (not fly).
Off on boxing day so will give a report when i get back.
