FISHING TEAM TAKES TIME OUT FOR CRICKET
Golden Lure 2003
In an amazing twist to this years third annual Bjelke-Petersen Dam Golden Lure Tournament held on the 1st and 2nd of November, one of the members of the winning team, Team Shikaree, had to leave his two team mates so he could play cricket for Blackbutt against Murgon on the Saturday afternoon of the competition. Team Shikaree comprising three generations of Morgensterns, Grand-father Darrel, Father Bruce and Junior competitor, Daniel amassed a winning total of 20.6m of fish caught and released greater than 30cm to take out the Caloundra City Powerboats Champion Team category, just edging out Team Predatek with 20.36m who took home the Kingaroy Caravans Runner Up Trophy. It was a last minute decision for Bruce to come as he had already committed to playing cricket. He would have been better off staying at the dam as he didn’t bother the scorers at the cricket and he was thinking of fishing the whole time he was away.
Adding to the prize and trophy haul amassed by the Morgenstern family, Daniel took out the Burnett Valley Pty. Ltd. Champion Junior Angler trophy with 8.47m of fish whilst Darrel caught and released the longest Golden Perch for the weekend which was sponsored by Bailey Mechanical Nanango going 57cm. Longest Australian Bass for the weekend was 53cm long and it was caught by Bill Tobin from the team Wifebreak who took home the trophy sponsored by SB Vending. Runner up in the Junior category was 5 year old Monique Mott from Team Evakool who amassed 7.23m of fish and took home the trophy sponsored by Murgon Leather.
Champion Angler taking away the Yallakool Tourist Park trophy was Vern Page from Team Predatek who put together a good collection of fish totalling 10.6m just edging out local angler Glen Radunz from The Dream Catches with 10.5. Glen walked away with the Bridgeman Downs Runner Up Trophy.
The winners of both major raffles were present and the 2.5 horsepower Mercury outboard sponsored by Hornet Heaven went to Len Batchelor of the team Harassabass whilst the winner of the Dairy Farmers sponsored 51cm Colour TV was Ron Baker of Kingaroy. Another local, Thomas Herbohn, also of Kingaroy walked away with the Saturday night major lucky draw of a Dairy Farmers Drizabone coat.
In trying conditions, teams that put together totals of greater than 10m did amazingly well. Friday night the 117 compeititors in 58 teams endured a storm with high velocity winds and were then confronted with a dam that had recently suffered a temperature inversion and the dirty water associated with that, strong northerly winds as well as fish that had been hit hard by anglers competing in three other recent fishing competitions on the lake. 2002s record totals were never in trouble but that is fishing. Not 6 weeks before many gun anglers were catching over 80 fish per weekend. Competition organisers, The Kingaroy Sportfishing Club Inc, were still satisfied with the final tally of 1002 fish caught and released in a day and a half all on lures.
