how far up the south johnstone are you fishing? I've tried there a couple of times with limited success on sooties and JP's. I've had far more success on the north johnstone and down in the creeks near the mouth. Do you have any canoe access points both put in and out for the south johnstone?

G'Day Max_Power,
Sorry a bit long winded in replying to your Question, Im in Brisbane and he is in Innisfail,so I have no idea how far up the Sth Johnstone he goes,a good sounder and an electric motor allows him to check out snags quietly,Canoe access if you know any of the cane farmers in the area you can put a canoe in anywhere, good luck keep an eye out for the Brown Geekos, not much protection in a canoe,Cheers and Good Fishin 2 u Whitto

Yep theres barra there allright, lived there for most of 2002. Its amazing how healthy the barra fishery is in Innisfail compared to Cairns only an hour or two away :o. The South Johnstone is unquestionably one of the best rivers I have ever fished. Near the mouth there are good numbers of large barra and jacks, further upstream there are plenty of opportunities for sooties, tarpon, and JP. You can launch watercraft at the ramp at mouth of the S.Johnstone. Although that may not be safe for a canoe. Launching further upstream may be a safer option, perhaps near the sugar mill where the brackish meets fresh ???.
