View Full Version : Freshwater eels
I've been into fishing for quite some time and just watched something on fresh water eels. I was wondering where a good place to fish for freshwater eels in Qld area.? Whats the best bait to use in the areas. Even if you have just caught a eel without wanting too where was it? i think it could be a interesting catch..

Lots at the golf courses around here, used to use pieces of meat mainly.

I know this sounds funny, but try! Eel Creek near Gympie.
Don't fish for them, but have seen plenty in there.

Depends where you are mate. Could point you to a few spots on the southside of Brisbane that are plagued by em. As Rob said, red meat is the go. Cut up crappy steak or chops or something (Mum used to nail me for knocking off rump steak from the freezer) into strips and throw on a 1/0 or 2/0. Only problem though is you'll probably catch a few turtles, causing them significant damage in most cases.

Fish at night at Boondoomba Dam with worms, shrimps, yabbies etc. Caught a massive one on 4 pound braid trolling RMG poltergeist, took me over 20mins to get it to the boat.

Just about any creek, river, stream, that flows into the Pacific, that you can find should hold eels. Elvers (baby eels) can crawl up vertical concrete/rock walls to push as far upstream as they can.
Their favourite food is crayfish but will eat just about anything that is alive or dead.
Hope that helps,
fitzy..
Yeah the eels gtot the Saragossa Sea to spawn and then they apparently die, and the elvers swim back...

Only in the Americas. Around here they spawn in deepwater in the vicinity of Noumea and Vanuatu.

hi there, on the gold coast there are a number of ares to catch eels, the lakes which surround robina are full of them, try around the Q-Super center and all water linking to there, they seem to be a lot more active during the night time. also the upper nerang river past weedens crossing at nerang has a lot. use the same techniques and again fish at nite. the upper currumbin creek and most other rivers and dams will have eels as they can travel accross land and dont need to be physically stocked, in oredr to become an angling prospect
hope that helps
good luck

In the brisbane river near jindalee bridge, oxley creek, rafting grounds....etc etc. Ponds and dams nearby. As everyone has said before they eat anything - fish strips and fresh water yabbies. I would never eat them from the river. Be prepared for some slippery knots!!
Have fun!
Thanks again guys and (didn't know that the eels from Australia spawn in Normea and Vanuatu) thanks for letting me know. Glad this site has been a big help..

Hi Maria
If you want a chance of catching a beauty my suggestion would be to try Lake Moogerah near Boonah.
With the low water level the eels have been giving quite a bit of curry to a few people trolling lures around.
1 of the funniest things to see is a 4-5 ft eel and 2 blokes in a canoe playing tug of war over a lure.
Try your red meat as suggested but just some earthworms off the bank and you should not have to wait too long.
Unfortunately it is a long time since Moogerah has run over so the eels have had a bit of a chance to put some weight on.
Cheers

Just also out of curiosity when using eels as bait for salt water fish, are they better alive or dead? And what fish could you catch with them and what size eels do you use? I'm gonna goto fraser with my family and they are big fishers they might give shark fishing ago..
Maria
Thanks again guys

I lost a few hooks to those bloody eels over the weekend down from the old weir at mt crosby. there wasnt a chance in hell I was going anywhere near them to get the hooks out so I had to cut the line as close as I could.
Squirming and slimeing and what not. Looks too much like a bloody snake for my liking. *shudder*

yes have caught a few on lures in the dams with bass lures, moogerah has some monsters and they will bust you up, leaving the tell tail slime as a calling card.

eeeeeeewwwwwwwwww..... eels : :-/ i wouldn't touch one. If one ever gets on my line, they can have the hook i don't want it back. They are clearly one of the grossest creatures ever thought of. Now i'll gut fish and clean them out or anything, but an eel..............:-S

I agree Maria - they do taste quite good smoked. The trouble is getting them to the smoked stage - slippery little suckers!
