Merry Christmas everyone,

I was at Somerset today drifting around and was doing ok. I notice a couple of guys anchored up throwing some lures and having a tough time. Electric over and had a chat, decided to rig up both their rods the same as mine( squidgee on 6lb vanish). Told them to follow the drift that i was on. Wouldn't you know it they managed to catch about 8 fish, 4 or 5 of which were over 45cm to the fork. They had a ball. Watching someone catch fish is sometimes better than catching them yourself. Cheers everyone

Great Stuff Dexter,

That's what it's all about.

I'll be up there in another couple weeks to try again. Hope I get some this time. It's overdue.

Thanks Tony and Macca

Will be going up again next week with Jaiden for a couple of days. I think that the speed limit at Kirkleigh will keep the skiers towards the spit end of Somerset. On Friday I virtually had the whole dam to myself. The bass were a bit more active to what they have been than the last few times I've been up. There were scattered fish around beams creek, pelican point but on this day they were good schools where Bay 13 joins on to Pelican Pt. The bite times on my watch showed 4 fish maybe thats why they were on.

Dex,

Glad to here something positive about Somersault, despite the amount if time I spend up there, I have only been fishing once since the last Stessl round, just too busy working on the County to wet a line. I'm going up Boxing Day for 2-3 weeks, feel free to call in and say G-day, or maybe i'll just see you on the water.

Good onya mate! I have been one of those blokes who have ventured to Somerset and come home empty handed. For what it is worth, mate, I think you should be commended for your attitude and actions!

Codswallop,

Thanks for the reply. I have been to Somerset plenty of times and have come out empty, so when you are fishing next to a couple of guys and catching fish its only natural to share your knowledge, I just took it to the next stage and gave them leaders, plastics and jigheads. To see them yelling and cheering was worth it.

Replying to another post about fishing Somerset, the place can shutdown as it did the weekend gone. Some advice i can give is, dont be scared to fish light lines 4 to 6lb braid, both with plastics and spinnerbaits. Try to fish the Dam on rising barometer, preferably over 1010hp. Somerset bass are very sensitive to the barometer because they mostly hang deep. Also if you can pick a good moon phase your chances are much better the bass will be active. Somerset bass are not usually scattered all over the dam so if find a good school stay in that area you will find if that school moves they wont go far. Plenty of times I have seen a troller hook on to a good fish, catch that fish and then continue aimlessly away trolling into the distant instead of working the area he just caught that fish on. At Somerset you can always tell the general area of where the bass are, most of the anglers are sitting on it.

With regards to working your lures, go heavy with your jigheads and spinnerbaits 3/8 to 1/2ou for jigheads and 1/2 and greater on spinnerbaits. Its all about keeping the lure where the depth the fish are hanging for as long as possible. In most cases this involves plenty of drop backs and winding very slow. I use mainly sliders and squidgee fish for my plastics with a bit of garlic scent, and Venom spinnerbaits. Hope all this info helps. Somerset can be a very frustrating place to fish but people can rave on about catching 30 to 50 30cm-35cm bass at Maroon but give me 1 50cm+ bass at Somerset any day.
