View Full Version : A week at Awoonga

10 of us went to Awoonga for the week after the M & G to try our luck at some of the good fish being caught at the moment. The weather held hot and Northerly for the whole time and the fishing didn't let us down as I caught my first meter+ fish for the week on the first night. (pic 1) I also met up with awoonga on the water and he gave me a couple of tips on where the big ones might be biting (thanx awoonga). Day two saw lots of smaller fish to an average of 70cm but as night fell I knew that I may be in trouble with a fish hitting hard and running for a long time but thankfully it went into deeper water and after about 25min I was able to boat the fish (pic 2) 114cm 22kg and the fatest Barra I have ever seen. This would be the norm for the week except for a couple of big fish drops and one that stuck 20kg weighed not measured as it seemed to be suffering and I wanted to get it back in the water as soon as possible (pic 3). When I get back to work I will hopefully expand on this thread.
Jeremy (ausfish) will hopefully also add to this thread and post some of of his pics as well.
Till I am back to work good fishing all

Dehydrated,
I prefer to hammer the points with shallow diving lures but others in the group just trolled in 10-12ft of water and had some good sucess as well

Still on hollidays and not spending much time on the net as yet.
As Darryl said 10 of us up there, 6 from Brisbane SFC, two from Bundy SFC and two visitors. I don't have the final numbers on total fish caught as yet, but I believe it will be around 150-200 barra for the week, and around 30-40 over 1m.
I caught 13 myself with my biggest 101 cm and 15.5 kg, and my fishing buddy Roy got 19. All fish were taken trolling. Great weather and sensational fishing. Would be great to have a go at casting next time.
Good to meet up with Awoonga and have a chat.
Haven't seen the results of the barra tour comp yet, but that will be interesting.
I have a few photos, but it will be a few days before I have time to post them.

Nice fish
were going down 16-19 Jan....a little one would do me....cause it would be a first for this ex Tasmanian...guess they dont compare to a 5 pound Brown trout.
but maybe not as good as a 75 pound Bluefin Tuna

Thanks Darryl for posting the pics. Must get a digital camera myself. Ended up with 8 barra to 103 for the 3 days. Totaly stoked after previous fishless trips :) if you don't count fish with wishkas. Pleased boat went well after dramas early on in the week.
Am still on hols this week and have had a couple trips in the saltwater. Highlights have been a nice northern blue of 7.8 kg on 4 out the front of north entrance and good size buck from the Callopie that went down well for tea with some fresh bread.
Hope to get back out the dam tomorrow arvo, will post how I went.

CQ-Hornet,
Only a new member, but hpoe to get some Ausfish stickers for the boat soon.
Fished Awonga on Friday night for 6 fish up to 75, very quiet till moon come up. Saw some larger fish caught. Quite a few boats on the water including some without lights after dark. :(Maybe they will get some before some unfortunate boat runs them down.

Bundylundy,
Those without lights need to be reported. [smiley=bobby.gif] We are getting far too many boats on Awoonga and those without lights are just creating hazards, and bloody dangerous situations for the innocent doing the right thing.
We do not need you people without lights at Awoonga at night !

Awesome read guys. Some top looking fish there.
A question if i may. Dad and i have been talking bout heading up there for a while now, we only have the Haines 17L and i'm wondering if these size boats are, well oversized for the Dam, or a waste of time trying to use them up there.
I don't want to tow the girl all that way only to find that she's to big and bulki to fish outta.
Dad and I are keen to fish for some Barra again we miss the Territory living. Will go thru some of the old boys photo's and post some of the Barra he used to catch in Territory many years ago.
