Visited Lake Awoonga today with a mixed result from all forms of wildlife. Actually caught a small Sootie Grunter 36cm, on a barra lure. We had a small snake climb aboard and decide to call my Yamaha outboard home. I ripped off a photo before i played the Steve Irwin role and gave him a quick wrestle and let him go back into the abyss. He was huge, not, all of about 60 cm and about as thin as a pencil. And we had an echidna walk across the ramp on our arrival home, so i snapped off another shot of that, not to mention the 50 million cane toads that littered the road surface all the way home. Will it ever rain properly??????????

John sounds like Awoonga is turning into Monduran. I hooked a lovely Specimen of a Tiger Snake a couple of weeks ago, my lure was out as he swam through and the point of one hook just got him.
Luckily I like snakes and keep pet one's , my clients were not to happy as I bought him back to the boat , if it was a Spider I would of known how they felt . In the end all was happy , Snake continued on , we continued fishing , but I could'nt understand why my guy's kept looking around the boat. Maybe they boy's had dropped something.
Nothing like a hard day at work, you'll put Steve Irwin out of work if you keep this up.

Was thinking of taking off for Awoonga for a few days tomorrow 2/12/05. Has anyone fished the dam in the past couple of days and could advise if it would be worth the trip from gold coast? OUTRIGGER

apparently a fair number of sooties get caught every year. i think i hooked a bigger one a few years ago, but it escaped. There must be a reasonable number in there, and i imagine those who know where to look and what to do will catch many more than this accidental stumbling! I heard that they can only spawn when the freshwaters run, and this one was caught way up the boyne river reaches! A few seem to get caught around that 2 to 2.5 kg size range, with the odd on twice that size.

#OUTRIGGER....
Awoonga is always worth the drive, barra are being caught as per the norm, not much has changed, and you certainly won't catch any barra if you stay at home! 20 kg fish and better are a good drawing card! Storms here today. Thunder here at present. No rain as yet this morning!

This man drove 1500 km's and was rewarded for his efforts.
Best of Luck.
