Depending on water temps from year to year, I find late Sept - Nov very good months in central Queensland.

Yeah mate, im not at all in favour of the way they hang the big buggers up either. If I could do something about it I could mate. But I don't think I can. You got any idea's on how we could get around a fair comp without hanging monster fish on a rack to be eaten?. I don't. As I said, I don't like the way it's done.

there are that many catch and release barra comps around that surely the organisers could take some directions off these guys or are they the ones that know everything and dont listen to any advise.these fish are too good to catch once.

Good on ya Cracker Jack, its going to be huge this year.
Bassgirl - The Tinaroo Barra bash is one of the biggest Barra comps in Australia, and draws anglers from all around Australia - and just to let you know, I dont know why they called it the Bash', but I think we all love the name.
Warrior - Its been brought up countless amounts of time (C&R that is...). For some reason they dont like it :-/ . I think most anglers that go to the comp feel fairly upset when they see all the big barra hanging up. I know I do...

I wouldnt say its one of the biggest comps in Australia TT. Thats a bit over the top. There are many, many other comps around Australia that are heaps more popular.
Comps like the BB will become less popular each year. People are becoming much more edjucated on the C&R debate, and rightly so. Our sport is under threat, and kill comps like the BB are not representing of the wider fishing community.
You CAN do something to make a difference. Speak to the local paper regarding your fears, spread the word how these fish are two valuable to throw in the bin after weigh in, and talk to the organisers and tackle shop owners. Brag mats and camera's are the way to go, who really cares what they weigh, there is little variation in length vs weight anyway.
You'll be well and truly on your way to getting a fishery up there that will rival Faust, Awoonga, Callide and Monduran if you succeed.
You will be surprised at the support you get once you get some momentum, including a very high percentage of support from this, and other websites.
Good luck.

Cheers Jas. Might just give that a go mate. A letter to the editor post in the Cairns post or something like that should errupt into something positive. Also a petition maybe :-/ ??? We'll see how things pan out. I've got studies and all sorts of other $hit to concentrate on too... but this is a priority, unlike Studying ;D .

Around april on the Ord, when the gates are closed. Around december on the Keep river. Around december/january on Kinchant and Peter Faust dams, which means hotter weather.

TT,
Now your talking! ;)
The future of Tinaroo is in the hands of guys like you. People need to understand the economic value of these big fish, that no matter how popular these comps become,C&R is the way to go. No one moans about someone taking the odd trophy fish for a mount, however kill comps are becoming a thing of the past. And rightly so.
The argument for killing big fish to let the little ones come through is absolute rubbish, and I know theres a few well known guys up there that advocate that the metreys should be culled.
These dams are about the very good chance of catching fish up over 60lb,(Tinaroo even bigger) and if they keep getting taken out, then anglers will end up fishing impoundments where they dont.
Anyway, good luck. I understand what its like to be busy, you might want to get some help from your fishing buddies.
I have a few friends up there that are influential in the industry, so I'll let them know what your undertaking.
In regards to the best months for Barra, give me August and Septemeber. no crowds, no small fish, and excellent daytime casting.
Cheers

Any flamin month I can get a leave pass to head north and chase em.
Some people chase barra according to the tides.
Some people chase barra according to the moon.
Some people chase barra according to thre seasons.
I chase barra according to when I can sneak away from home and NSW ;D ;D
You Qld's that have Barra on your doorsteps give me the poops sometimes >:(, I have a mind not to come up there at times and grace you with my presence ;) ;D ;D

I'll go with whykickacatalong,
Whatever month you get the chance to fish is best!!
Every month can produce awesome barra fishing. What changes in those four seasons is where and how you catch your barra. If you move with the change, you can obtain great results every month of the year, but if you fail to fish where the fish are, you will have a sad trip. If you love trolling, you will have a better chance in the warmer months, yet will have a lower result in the cool weather months. It all comes down to different fishing techniques for different months. Jigging, trolling, and casting all have a better effect in the right season. Get them a bit mixed up and you can miss out on barra. Of the four seasons, each month can get a big wrap. So not one month gets a bigger mention from where I sit. Eg, May is beautiful,
Decemebr runs hot, March sticks proud from memory, so too does October.
Add these months to everyone elses favourite time and we would just about cover all 12!

Any month that you can get a leave pass. Only been able to get four months leave from the boss.
Quick way is to book her a ticket to visit relatives south(Melbourne) then arrange a trip north for a few weeks.
You end up in the good books by being considerate.
Anyway it worked this time. Suppose next time it will have to be something else. Probably cost a bit more, but it will be worth it.
But if you want peace. Keep the boss happy.

You don't have to be in a comp to enjoy catching fish! I don't understand why they are so popular?

I couldnt agree more mate!. You dont have to be in a comp to enjoy catching fish. Ive only fished one comp in my life (Tinaroo Barra Bash, last 3 years in a row), and I can't say I enjoy the comp anymore then when I fish the place in July, or any other time of the year. One thing I love about comps, is the competitiveness of it - Just a heap of guys and girls trying to outfish each other in a fun and friendly way. But I guess it comes to down to what comp your actually fishing in, afterall Ive only been to one and I wouldnt have clue what the other comps are based around other then catching the big one.
After school, I want to be in as many comp's as I possibly can around QLD... Not because I want to win money, or prizes, but to have fun and learn more!. Its what fishing's all about...
Thats my view on it... and thats all im going to say about it...
