Open to all opinions.
Going to somerset on the 21st of sept for eight days. The boys and i are keep for a night fish, some people say fishing on a certain moon phase is better than others, i have printed out the moon phases for that period and it looks like it will be a new moon on the 22nd then moving towards the last quarter phase.
Good or Bad ?

Hey gav. In my experience it's good to have a bit of moon up in the sky if ya wanna surface fish for bass, creates a defined silouhette for them to smash more accurately. More accuracy means more hook-ups. If the moon is making as you described, towards the end of your stay it will be well up in the sky from dusk onwards and big enough to throw some decent light. Just hope that it's nice clear, still weather. We've been accounting for a few on poppers in the impoundments recently, and each fish is worth about 5 on a slow rolled jackall, in the excitement stakes. Definitely stock up on some top water gear.

Hi tiges,
love the surfaces action as i am use to a bit out at the hinze dam in the warmer months, But have not really tried at somerset. Have you surfaced fished there before, and if so any tips on locations and what to use. We will be based at kirkleagh.
I have my usual poppers i use at hinze.
I am guessing just target the exposed trees as there really isn't any weedy banks to target is there.
Please correct me if i am wrong

Haven't fished surface at Somerset, have noticed it's apparent lack of weed beds. But I'm sure there would be areas condusive to surface approach. Structure as you mentioned, and maybe more bankside locations where you'll also find smoother conditions in the lee of wind. Should be fish patrolling these areas after dark. I'd be doing some recon on the first days to find suitable areas under the light of day, then targetting them later in the week at night when the moon phase improves.
