Boat Etiquette??

I was just wondering if there was any etiquette trolling?
On Sunday arv I was casting off the bank in a little inlet on Callide. A couple of boats were trolling in the middle of the puddle.After watching me land a 104cm barra and before I'd got it back in the water, a tinny with a 2 stroke comes in front of me & stops. The bay was under 100m x 50m.
I'd been casting for 2 hours & had a couple of hits & dropped 1 in 15 mins before that. Guess what? Not another touch!!
Is this bad form or am I wrong?

No...its piss poor form... we had various examples of PPF in boating ettiquette at Awoonga in the last few days. In the basin, approaching the feeding birds...slowly getting close, with a cloud of thick black arches on the sounder, 2 tossers roar straigh through the middle, scattering everything.. this happened more than once I might add. I guess it comes down to either they dont know any better or dont care... PPF

Typical inconsiderate cr*p that usually comes from people who can't catch a fish even in the good times. I guessing that they didn't catch anything.

They diddn't have a fish finder ;D so they used there biloprop finder ;D

They suck, They have no sense of good jugdement and no care for anyone if they had of came within casting distance of your cast mabe that would have been ok but to troll through mate may as well stated thowing rocks in (or at them)

We call what they did "Using the bent rod pattern." They can't find the fish on thier own so they look for the bent rods. It happens to everyone from time to time and I agree its sucks. I'd rather go fishless than do that to someone.

i agree with you all poor form all round - at awoonga we were following a km long flock of birds and a water skier decided to go through the whole gathering at 100km per hour which does make you fairly mad after travelling all the way from SEQ to chase the mighty barra.

Ha i've seen one of the best ppf at Cressbrook Dam this winter - i was fishing with this Huge guy the size of a water buffalo and we were using the electric motor to quietly work a bank from right to left as it was a beautiful day to be on the water fishing and we were heading to a nice point with some weed.

Just before we got there these 2 skinny clowns in a noisy boat hammered over not 100 from us, not 50m from us not 30m from us but 15m and started casting at the point we were casting at and they came in on our left which is the direction we had been travelling for the last 2hours, we could have put a cast right in to their boat.

We couldn't believe it - we are generally nice patient people but this was testing us so we motored off giving them a nice amount of wash to deal with and went on to catch some nice bass. It's funny to think what would have happened if they had met a couple of fisho's we know that don't suffer fools gladly - the guys might have had a nice swim home ha - The thing is if you do say something you never know what will happen to your car/trailer while you are out fishing as we like to stay on the water as long as possible etc.


We think that the Etiquette for someone already working a bank going to their left goes like this - any new boat to the bay/area etc should come in behind the boat that has done all the hard work - chosen the area first and because of this they deserve first crack.

What do you think? This will be interesting to see what happens in the Barra comps coming up ha i suggest a new column (shit person of the week) i think between all of us on here we should find some rippers!!

Yep. A clear case of PPF >:( We had the conga line of boats join our trolling pattern at Awoonga last week after we pulled a 101. The four of us were working two boats and we tried to shield one nose onlooker from coming too close by driving in between the boated barra and him so he couldn't get a look.

It was too late by then, especially when our camera comes out and we release him back into the water wearing a tag as jewellery. I think they must have designs on pouncing on the same fish as soon as it swims back to his snag lol.

Here's one that happened to me a few years back. (Feb. 2003)

A friend and I went to Lay Lake, just south of Birmingham Al., to practice for an upcoming tournament. We pulled on a point and began making long casts with deep running crankbaits. We notice a local guide watching us but didn't think anything of it. After about 35 to 40 minutes and probably a dozen boated bass this guide pulls BETWEEN us and the point we were fishing. He dropped anchor, pulled out a cast net and let it fly two or three times. We were getting really agitated at this guy by this time. Then he rigs up six or eight rods with live shiner minnows and sets them out. It wasn't long and he had a fish or two in the boat. He was so close we could hear his cell phone ringing and it was in a storage box. As angry as we were we tried to do the right thing, we backed off the spot another 30 yards or so and let him have the place to himself. The next weekend during the tournament we were practicing for here comes the same guide for weigh in. He told everyone how he had located his fish and how he was on them for almost a month all the while looking straight at us. That would probably sent me off the deep end had we not had almost twice the weight he had. We still got beat by a team with nearly 4 lbs. more than us but at least we kicked his rear end on that day.

Have not yet encountered any PPF on the water, probably because these northern impoundments (Tinaroo, Koombooloomba, Quade, Faust etc) arn't as 'boat' populated on a daily basis, compared to places like Awoonga, or perhaps Somerset. I do though shake my head from time to time at some of the Skiers on Tinaroo - Most of them are fairly experienced and have respect for other water user, but some of the others who don't know Tinaroo well and have come up from the coast for the day or weekend, have absolutely no idea what they are doing. Though I won't gripe too much, Im a keen water skiier myself, and I don't mind seeing people enjoying themselves on the water.

How about Boat Ramp Etiquette... Now that's an entire column all of it's own. People that stand there in the middle of the boat ramp organising their gear instead of doing it before they hog the ramp or once they are in the water. Drives me mad!!!! :o
If you want some entertainment when you aren't boating, park at a boat ramp. It never ceases to amaze me the stupid things some people do... Arghh!!! Stay on the water and away from the ramps. Think that's the best idea! ::)

Experienced something similar the other weekend off 1770, we were anchored on a wreck with a decent distance between us and the next boat and along comes prize ###### no.1 and anchors between us but a bit to the rear. As tide drops off, we ended hanging just about over top of their anchor rope. We ended up shifting so as we could fish out both sides of the boat again. As we packed up to shift, fishing mate made comment loud enough so other boat could hear about ignorant a...holes and their boating etiquette. They just continued fishing.

Always give other fishermen room wether they are in a boat or on the shore room to fish and not impede on their "space". Plenty don't reciprocate this.

I'm the fishing mate Jeff is reffering to and if I could have hooked anything decent I would have made sure the fish went under their anchor rope. Its amazing what a little bit of travelling mono can do to a stationary rope ;D ;D oops did I cut through your rope sorry about that ::) ::)

Had it at the last Bassin QLD comp at Boondooma. Was working the banks with spinnerbaits, following behind another boat, which I had asked if it was ok to fish his dirty water, about 100 metres or so off him, which is generally the unwitten rule in the tournaments anyway, when I had not one boat but two cut in front of me to fish the same bank. Now these two boats where in the comp too, but didn't know who they where. One guy was that close that he was casting across my line. NFI!!! So I got the s*#ts and nicked off to the islands and ended up catching all my fish there on fly, to end up getting 6th place. Suppose if it wasn't for these a holes, I may not have got my fish. Not the point though. From now on I'm always going to say my piece. Some just don't realise, others just don't care. If everyone starts saying something, in a polite manner, they may start to realise. If not, sink their boats!!! LOL

Came across a couple of mental giants myself yesterday. Quite obvious they were as smart as they were handsome....

After sitting in a small inlet for a while (anchored) floating baits we saw a single boat trolling along a stretch of pontoons and then go back again.

After a while we stated to lose our position due to tide/wind so decided to re anchor. Ended up moving to a spot at the end of the long line of pontoons (in a gap about 50m long with one more pontoon before the inlet we were at previously) and anchoring pretty much in line with the boats on the pontoons so we could float some bait in under the pontoon. Now keep in mind that this line of waterfront houses and pontoons is several hundred meters long with one or two inlets off it.

Anyways, whilst re anchoring (having a little trouble getting it to hold so it took a while), old mate and his boyfriend come back and immediately start swearing at us for anchoring in his path. (we were maybe 20ft off the wall with about 100m of navigatable water on the other side). After inviting them to drive around more words followed. Now, I'm a reasonable man but if you continue to swear at me, then you aren't going to get what you want. So I called him a ###### and politely informed him that we are here to stay. The mental giant turns around and goes back the other way.

Several minutes later, here they come again. We have lines out and and are having a good chat. Master skipper drives within two metres of us, and as he does make mention that he is intentionally trying to snag ouu lines with his lures. He is successfull, and snags one of them at which point with shouts of "Woohoo" as he guns his engine and takes off up river. Anyway, I ended up losing one hook, one sinker and a swivel to his rather large lure as he disappears into the distance. No sweat there, I'd already been snagged twice already.

Anyway, we had the last laugh (unbeknown to old mate and his wife) when I pulled my first ever Mangrove jack from that spot. A little baby in the low 50's no less.

Good times! I love a good clown act.

CBS if I read your report you were in the wrong, you invaded his space he didn't invade yours, at the very least you could have pulled into this trolling pattern with some lures in tow if there was enough room or anchored 50 out and fished happily, he was trolling the distance from the pylons for a reason a not disrespecting anyone.

Keep in mind that this particular boat had been past once then turned around at almost this exact spot and headed far down the river again before coming back.

Is 550 metres of continuous target zone out of a total of 600 metres (according to google earth) available not enough for this guy. Hell, I even said I wouldn't mind if this guy wanted to troll past us.

It wasn't like I was dropping in front of an entire procession of boats nor did this guy have a well sustained pattern of operation.

you defs did the right thing... i think trolling is a lazy way to fish..personal i make sure i have a full bucket of water if i think a guys going to come up real close to snag my lines...if im with my mates make sure we all have a full bucket, so if they don't have a bilge pump it's going to be a crappy trip home

Had a friend doing a trolling run alond a drop-off in Somerset when a competitor in a bass tournament comes up and gives him daggers for daring to troll along his possie.

My mate ignored him and kept on his trolling beat. He also called up a couple of his club mates to join him in trolling the beat.

Some people seem to think that because they're fishing a comp, it gives them some sort of privilege.

i think you might start boat rage if you reply to every nob on the water bill but yes it can get you pee off pretty quick especially in a comp id say might have been there tatic to get on ya nerves hey bill have a look at the barra in freshwater reports i got on the weekend at monduran
