Hey,

The Calais is a really nice reel, if you can afford it.
I have used it and it's smoooooth!

You said that you're using it for soft plastics right?
Crankbaits rods are made for a specific function...
that is... crankbaits. Usually crankbait rods are not
as sensetive and the power of the rod is much higher.
The Loomis 845 is a Med-Heavy rod.
That's not something you would want to use for
plastics.

At least here in California... for bass fishing, I would use
a medium power and fast action rod that's light and sensetive for working plastics.
This way you can feel every bump on the bottom, or when it runs into structure, and of course the fish strikes.

So... go with the Calais, but ... look for another rod that will work better with soft plastics.

G'day David,
I love my Loomis Crankbaits, but if you are planning to use it specifically for fishing Soft Plastics, I would recommend something with a faster action. The 845 is a very heavy stick. I use a 903 and an 841, and unless I was Barra fishing I don't think I need any heavier. I'm told that an 845 is a bit long for Barra though. Ian Miller does some nice rods, including the Classic Bass that are worth looking at as well. Similar price to the Loomis.

Crankbaits are bibbed, diving minnow type lures. Crankbait is the US name for them, as in cast it out and crank (wind) it back in. Like stump jumpers, oargees, voodoo, legends, strike zones, etc etc etc

Roman,

Lolrdy `and JIP, Although in what they say is correct may be leading you astray, I do not own a LOOMIS Crank -BAIT rod but when the person starting the thread was asking about crankbait rods,
Crankbait rods are a specific rod ment for Crankbaits, ( bibed lures ) soft tip to allow the LURE to be inhaled so the speal goes.
From all replies Aussiebasser is correct in what he is saying about rods, Look up a Loomis site and see for yourself, They are very popular here in Aussy land and very dear as well.

Go to this site and all will be explained.
