Hi guys, just signed up a member.
Firstly would like to say what a great little community you have going, and its good to see friendly advice being shared among other fishers. :-)

Anyway my question is i have just bought my first lure, which i bought with out much thought as to how i would use it. The lure is a RAPALA orginal floating 3cm, which i'm told is mainly for catching trout and some redfin in the local rivers, lakes. (p.s i'm from down in Geelong) anyway my question is, is there a specific single type of rod i should be using my lure on. ie. does it require a fly fishing rod, or can i use a "regular" fishing rod. By regular i mean the common type of fishing rod, sorry about my termalogy still learning the game.

Anyway if someone could help me out that would be great.

Welcome,

I wouldn't recommend using a fly rod to cast a lure. You could probably do it, but a light treadline(eggbeater) rod would be better.

I suggest having a chat with someone in your local tackle shop.

Thanks for the reply Wes,
just to inform you, i'm using it on a eggbeater Rod so i should be fine.
May i ask what you mean by "light treadline" ? Do you just mean to make sure the line is a lightweight sort?

WELCOME TO AUSFISH MATE, Just use a light spinning rod and reel outfit or a baitcaster for the lure casting or trolling......Get yourself some Braid...something like FIRELINE..(its ultra thin line) brilliant stuff.....almost no stretch in the line so the hook up rate is grater and also with the thin braided line your lure will dive deeper.
make sure you attach 60 cm of mono as a trace. use a loop knot to tie the lure on or a very small strong clip.
good luck mate....if you don't have success on your first trip DON'T GIVE UP.....it may take several trips before you get a fish on that lure but mate when ya do its the best fun ever!!!!!!

howdy great site hey, just to answer your question a 'threadline' is another name for an eggbeater 'light' means a small one that can hold light line. You have a light lure so light line light reel is needed and a light rod action so in other words keep everything light (unless your trolling) and when you get that heavy fish on your light gear yeeeeeeeeha!! i love rapala's. good luck cheers, bashman

Amart at Cannon Hill recently had a clearance sale on a heap of small Rapalla lures (FR3 &FR5'S various colours) that would suit Bream, Bass,Flathead etc. Normal price was about $16.00, on special for about 5 bucks each !!! :o :o

I purchased a stack but there was still more left :D

Cheers
