Hi there people,

I am just starting to get into Squidgy fishing for bream and flathead, and am looking at getting a rod and reel just for this style of fishing, I have been told by many to go for a bait caster rod with a bait caster reel,
but from the video's and magazine artical's guys seem to be using spinning rod's and reel's. http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/images/smilies/cwm36.gif

so at this stage my head is about the only thing spinning.... http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/images/smilies/cwm3.gif*LOL*

any info would be gratefull.

Cheers Navi

Depends what you are chasing but if its mainly flatties and bream a light spinning combo will be fine.

I would say almost certainly that a light spin combo is far more suited for the target species you are describing & the suitable sized plastics needed for em.

A lot of the times when fishing soft plastics you will need to use light jig heads like 1/8 oz, 1/16 oz jig or lighter jig heads to fish them effectively, The weight of these light heads is not sufficient enough to make the spool revolve properly on baitcaster reels. Trying to cast ultralight weights on baitcasters amounts to more problems than benefits ,backlashes and short casts. Where as Spinning reels overcome this problem through their design , the spool does not revolve during the cast , so light weight can be cast easily, using light lines or braid will help facilitate longer cast as well.
The other benefits in using a light braid with soft plastics is the hook setting advantage and the ability to feel or read what’s happening at the other end.
Spinning reels definitely the go for the species your targeting .
