i was looking at a shimano rod [telescopic] and was wondering are telescopics just as good as other rods?

their primary purpose is to be compact ie for hiking etc. They achieve that but sacrifice taper & feel to do so. The more joins in a rod the less taper & feel.
I had the hilarity of watching a mate have a week old one snapped in two by a rogue GT on Hinchinbrook 10 years back. Like any rod obey the recommended breaking strains & you'll be OK - he did not & paid the price. It had been catching smaller fish quite well up to then & seemed to cast fine. There would have been vast improvements in them over a decade.
Basically I'd only buy one if the compact design is your primary consideration.

Pyrox,
I bought a shakespeare telescopic spinning rod in Scotland during my trip overseas in 1998. Because of no room in my bacpack I decided not to take a rod with me from Australia. Worst thing I ever did. I last only 2 months before I bout the little setup.
It went on to catch countless trout around the U/K and Europe.
Have since brought it home and it lives permanenttly in the boat. Just whip it out when you need a small rod. Has since caught bream/whiting/flathead/bass/yellowbelly etc.
Doesn't have the flexibility of a one of two piece but is a very handy little rig.

I was fishing the Coomera River about a year ago with the wife and she pull up some old fishing line from the bottom, attached to the end was a Shimano telescopic rod and reel.
It now lives in the boot of my car with a soft plastic tied to it. never know when you might find a likely spot for a flick. :o
Must say though, its is a geat little rod (and the price was right),it has caught me a few flatties but might get worried with something realy big gets on

Recently purchased a shimano 6ft telescopic spin rod ($25)teamed up with shimano cx2000 reel ($65) using 6 lb mono line. not my first choice of gear to take fishing but bought it to keep in a kayak. recently caught 2 bream 1-1.5kg in cowan creek using rebel crawdad lure and it performed well.

i had a simmilar setup that i took to zimbabwe in 97, it was a beaut little stand in rod that caught some nice perch in lake kariba up to 2lbs, and had a brief encounter with a tiger fish before it chewed me off in mid flight. the best fish on it was a kordoo(spelling?) it's a type of eel tail catty caught in the zambezi river,it went 9lbs and it got donated to a local worker at the resort we stayed at.had some fun with trout cod at home until a larger unstoppable green fish retired the rod at the second joint. but they are a must for any o/s traveller with the sickness (not sars) .......
this is a tiger fish below.... cheers
