G'day Johnny.
They're great reels for salt water work, but very heavy.
I've got a 750ss on a 12ft setup and it's more than enough.
See what others think anyway.
Cheers, Slates

I use an 8500SS for high speed spinning Tuna/Kings/Spaniards etc. They don't come any tougher ... nice smooth drags (just ask the folks up north why they still use them for Sailfish/GT's etc) and can take some pretty hard knocks too. Would recommend them to anyone ;D

Got a 7500ss with 6kg on a custom 13'6 spinning for tailor etc. excellent setup. Drags smooth as, and it seems to put up with the salt etc. ;)

Check the drag tho gav - it doesn't like too much salt!

I have 8500ss on an Albagraph. Great combination. If you want something to last forever, with a great drag and can handle big fish - go the Penn.
However, I do think that some of the newer Japanese reels are better balanced, lighter and easier to use. If I had my time over again, I would definitely buy a reel with the "baitrunner" facility.
Check them all out.

I have to agree with David , I used to have 8500ss & 750ss penn reels, had em for ten years with only minor problems & fished em hard!. Recently sold the penns & got me a Daiwa Emblem X550 - Casts further , retrieves faster (122cm per crank), better balance , lays the line better and it's lighter and its got twistbuster line roller and the drag is smooooooth and...........

Gees thanks Chris. I thought I was all set to get a Penn, now I'm thinking the Daiwa and the extra $50 for it.
The problem is that there's too many bloody reels to choose from. I like that the Penn has a larger spool, is cheaper and you can absolutely cane it and it will still keep going, buttttt......if the Daiwa is lighter, casts further and retrieves quicker then that suits me.
Can't get both, shame really.

A word of advice if your going to go Diawa dont go past the BG series, they have machine cut brass gears, the emblem have die cast gears. As for the twistbuster sounds good but all spin reels twist line doesn't matter what type of line roller you have. The spinfisher and the BG are as good as each other.Try and look past the flashy light as a feather add-on's and look at reels that haven't changed there look in 25 years

the daiwa BG series is ok but to slow for fast retrieve also it has brass gears which make it smooth but not as tuff as the penn ss with s/steel gears the daiwa X is as fast in retrieve as anything else out there but will be nicer to use

I read at the start of this post that you want to use 30lb braid. The sole reason I started to look at the new Jap reels was to spin with braid. I have tried to use 30lb bionic braid on 8500ss & found the level wind to be unsutable due to the fact that it leaves a bulge of line on the top & bot of the spool, even when I underfilled the spool I found this would cause extra loops of line to flog out when attempting to cast any great distance. This would result in a great big knot sailing towards the horizon behind my lure or worse. :'( Now I know braid must be wound on tightly to avoid this sort of thing but, on retreiving line after a cast it is only as tight as the lure , bait, fish or conditions allow. Think about it .
Penn make great reels but they are not designed for casting braid lines.

Johnny, I have 2 9500s and an 8500 and really like the 9500s, they are much smoother than the other ss penns, different drag setup ball line roller, none of the whirring sounds the spinfishers are renowned for, new and improved I would say they are. both reels are about a year old and after a full strip down appear as new and they get some solid use.

Hi Krazy.
Have just spooled up the daiwa emlem X 5500.It's a ball tearer. So smooooooth.Well balanced. The line[ 20 pound fireline] lays as flat as a lizard drinking. The penn 850 spin fishers and tss 4 will be staying at home from now on,will be using them as a back up reel..
cheers george. ;).

G'day George
Sweat piece of gear eh!
Gotta watch the speed though :-X. I put mine on a Sabre 220 cos its got a soft tip so I dont pull their heads off :o.
I found I had to slow down my winding cos they go so fast!!. I also use 20lb fireline with about 15ft of knotted dog leader to try and give it a bit of stretch, This combo casts to the horizon & turns 40gr slugs into poppers with ease. Going back to a 8500ss would be like getting out of a Ferrari to drive a VW :-X, did I just say that? :o :o

Know what you mean.Great to use.Fishing reels/rods/lines have just kept improving over the years.Use mine Loomis 905 and synder glass super barra SB7.The SB7 is a cheap 7 foot stick, only costing about $ 40 for the blank.Looking for something with more power.
cheers george.

G'day George
Have you had a look at the Prograph sticks?, 5,6,7. Very tough with lots of lifting power, Got a 5 thats rated 8-10 but I think 10 is closer to the mark!. 7 is rated 12-15 :o, would make a top jig stick.

Thanks Chris.
Had a pro-3/stradic 4000 a few years back.Landed some nice spotties [3-6kg]on it at South West Rocks in NSW.One 8kg tuna was unlucky as well. Will have a bit of a look around next time I'm on the coast. In the process/looking to make a 6- 6-6ft spin stick to use for 3-4 inch plastics in the rivers/creeks around prossy.Have a new Daiwa capricorn 2500 to stick on it.Will be fishing 14 pound fireline .Mite extend a altragraph 3000 .Have Loomis crankbait 756 that might just get striped and rebuilt.
cheers george.
